Fraser Island

World Heritage Listed Fraser Island is situated off the coast of Hervey Bay. It is the largest sand island in the world, and the only place on earth where ranforest grows on sand. This unique island environment is approximately 800,000 years old, and is 120km in length. Fraser's Aboriginal name is K'gari, meaning paradise, and was inhabited by the Butchulla people for over 5,500 years. Fraser Island offers an abundance of natural attractions, such as the clean freshwater lakes of McKenzie and Allom, Eli Creek and spectacular sand formations known as The Cathedrals. On the eastern beach of the island is The Maheno - Fraser Island's famous deteriorating shipwreck.

The island is also renowned as a wildlife sanctuary, being the habitat of thousands of bird species, dugongs, dolphins, turtles and humpback whales between August and November. Fraser is also home to 325 species of birds including the Australian stork, and creatures such as wallabies, possums and flying foxes can be seen roaming freely. Fraser Island can be accessed by taking a guided walking tour to the western side or travelling by 4WD, barge or charter aircraft across the Great Sandy Strait.
