New Years Day
1st January
January 1 st is an important day in Australian history as it was on this day in 1901 that the colonies of New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia federated to become the Commonwealth of Australia. The Perth Cup is held on January 1 st, and is the most prestigious and important event on the Perth sporting calendar. Described as the ‘party of the year’, the Perth Cup promises fantastic sunny weather and an exciting day at the races.
January 1 st is of course celebrated down under for yet another reason – New Year’s Day! Most of the New Years celebrations take place the night before on New Year’s Eve, which is when the whole of Australia joins together to celebrate. Sydney is the hotspot for all New Year’s celebrations, with the highlight being the breathtaking Sydney Harbour Fireworks display.
