Melbourne Commonwealth Games 2006

The Melbourne Cricket Ground

15 - 26 March 2006

The 2006 Commonwealth Games will take place in Melbourne between the 15 th and 26 th March at sports venues along the banks of the Yarra River. The Event’s Opening Ceremony and Athletics Competition will take place at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, which is one of the largest and most impressive sports venues on earth. The Commonwealth Games also features the Sports Program for Elite Athletes with a Disability (EAD) which is incorporated into the programme for the rest of the games.

The games incorporate 12 individual and four team sports as listed below:

  • Aquatics (including diving, swimming and synchronized swimming)
  • Athletics
  • Badminton
  • Basketball,
  • Bowls
  • Boxing
  • Cycling (track, road and mountain bike)
  • Gymnastics (both artistic and rhythmic disciplines)
  • Hockey
  • Netball,
  • Rugby 7s
  • Shooting ( Clay Target, Pistol, Small Bore and Air Rifle, and Full Bore Rifle)
  • Squash
  • Table Tennis
  • Triathlon
  • Weightlifting
