Aussie TV Ad Banned in Britain !
Controversy has been building over a new advert from the Australian Tourist Board which uses the catchphrase "So where the bloody hell are you?" British regulators have banned the ad from TV screens, saying that it can run only if the word "bloody" is taken out - although it can be shown in cinemas, on the Internet and in print without alteration.
The Australian employees at Oz-Talk express their opinions on the subject:
Jake Gordon (Aussie Expert): "I think it's a pretty big overreaction, but at the same time the Aussies should have looked into it with more detail before launching a multi-million dollar campaign."
Chris Forde (Travel Sales Manager): "I believe that Tourism Australia wanted to try something similar to the extremely successful 1980's campaign where Paul Hogan coined the phrase "Throw another shrimp on the barbie," highlighting Australia as a country full of laid- back, beer-swilling, sun-loving larrikins."
Tara Wallace (Aussie Expert): "The catchphrase is typical Aussie slang and is meant in a very easy-going and friendly sense as a welcome to the country. It shouldn't be taken as offensive, but should attract the British to the Aussie humour and emphasise the 'no worries attitude'."
